Subject	Rubber Half Moon Valve Plug Purpose?

Message	There are two half moon plugs on either side valve castings in the back of the engine. The OEM plugs are made of rubber. Any one know the purpose of these plugs. Are they made out of rubber to act as a pressure safety valve. I purchased two aluminum replacements but not sure if this is smart thing to do if they are supposed to be a safety plug that blows out on excessive pressure.
